Patriots’ PUP list and what it could mean

The Patriots take to the field in Foxborough this week to begin Summer practice. This will be Jimmy Garopollo’s first training camp as starter. The quarterback fill in, during Brady’s four game suspension, will be without seven veterans, entering into practice. Though it may be challenging upfront, this will give Garopollo some time to get into a rhythm and cultivate on field relationships with other players.

The following have been placed on the physically unable to perform list: wide receivers Julian Edelman and Danny Amendola, running back Dion Lewis, tight end Clay Harbor, tackle Sebastian Vollmer and guards Shaq Mason and Tre’ Jackson. Players can be removed from the PUP list at any time as long as they are deemed physically ready to rock again.

Edelman recently underwent a minor foot procedure involving the reinsertion of a screw, building off a prior surgery. So, hopefully, his tenure on the PUP list will be brief.

Amendola also suffered through medical procedures in the offseason due to knee and ankle issues. It’s possible the wide receiver may be out of commission for a while. Should that be the case, Amendola’s position may be temporarily replaced by 4-year veteran Chris Hogan or perhaps Malcolm Mitchell.

Mitchell, a rookie, has yet to prove his salt on the battlefield. This could be a good opportunity for him to shine. Mitchell’s college career demonstrated remarkable speed and very capable catching hands. However, I’ll still be rooting for Amendola’s swift return to the field.

Lewis is still recovering from a torn ACL from last November, which landed him on the injured/reserve list. During June’s minicamp, Lewis expressed optimism, saying his recovery is going well.

Lewis was a crucial cog in the well-oiled Pats’ machine last year. The guy’s got great hands and is fast as an eye blink. He makes opponents look foolish with his cuts and speed. Defenders just miss him. Let’s pray that knee of his gets better.

Thursday morning will see the Patriots’ full public training session.
