The Patriots made their first outside signing of free agency, agreeing to a three-year deal with former Bengals DE Jonathan Fanene. Scout.com's Aaron Wilson first reported the move.
A seven-year veteran, Fanene played in all 16 games last season with two starts. He had 24 tackles and a career-high 6½ sacks.
Fanene started his NFL career with the Bengals in 2005. He has 13½ career sacks in 81 career games.
The way we see it
The Patriots have struggled the past two seasons with depth on the defensive line. Fanene showed an effective pass rush last season and should factor into the rotation with that skill set. The Patriots cut DL Mike Wright in February, and Fanene should help fill the role Wright had when he was healthy.
