Patriots' Dennard receives jail sentence

The SportsXchange

New England Patriots cornerback Alfonzo Dennard was sentenced to 30 days in jail Thursday for assaulting a police officer and resisting arrest during an April 2012 altercation.

The sentence is expected to begin March 1, 2014. He was also put on 24 months of probation for each charge and required to serve 100 hours of community service.

Dennard was found guilty of third-degree assault by a jury Wednesday in Lincoln, Neb., following a weeklong, high-profile trial.

The incident took place outside a Lincoln bar -- in the same state where Dennard starred at cornerback for the Cornhuskers -- days before the 2012 NFL Draft. Considered a potential first-round pick in the 2012 NFL Draft, he slipped to the seventh round.

As a rookie with the Patriots, Dennard started seven regular-season games and two playoff games. He also faces a suspension by the NFL.

The judge in the Lincoln, Neb., courtroom also said Thursday that she would consider arguments to change the terms of the probation, including possibly to suspend the jail time, the Lincoln Journal Star reported.
