Patriots claim OT Haslam

The New England Patriots were awarded offensive tackle Kevin Haslam off waivers from the San Diego Chargers.

To make room for Haslam on the 90-man offseason roster, the Patriots released rookie offensive lineman R.J. Mattes.

Haslam, 26, previously played for the Jacksonville Jaguars (2010-11) and San Diego Chargers (2012). He also spent most of the offseason and training camp with the Oakland Raiders in 2012.

He signed as a rookie free agent with Jacksonville out of Rutgers in 2010. Haslam, 6-5, 310, has played in 10 NFL games with three starts.

Haslam was signed to the Chargers' practice squad after being released by the Raiders. He was signed to the 53-man roster in Week 11 of last season and played in five games with three starts at left tackle.

Mattes, 23, was a four-year startersigned by the Patriots as a rookie free agent on May 13.
