Patriots begin addressing safety by adding Gregory

After starting six different players at safety last season, the Patriots looked to solidify the position in free agency by signing former Charger Steve Gregory to a three-year deal. The way we hear it, the Patriots believed they had a bigger need at safety than corner, which likely means that Devin McCourty, who filled in at safety in sub-packages down the stretch, will stay at corner. The team is very high on CB Ras-I Dowling as well, even though he missed all but two games (both starts) as a rookie because of injury.

After the Patriots' decided to part ways with both Brandon Meriweather and James Sanders last offseason, they went through a revolving door at the position during the season. Gregory's contract, reportedly between $2 million and $3 million per year, indicates that he might factor into the starting rotation alongside Patrick Chung. One daily team observer believes Gregory, who started 13 games last season and has 17 career passes defensed and four career interceptions, will play center field and brings more skill and speed to help cover tight ends than what is on New England's roster. The Pats aren't done at the position, as they are reportedly hosting LaRon Landry for a visit and could continue to add safeties in the draft.
