On Wednesday, October 3, 2012, Pat Neshek, the pitcher for the Oakland Athletics, and his wife suffered a tragic loss. Not even 24 hours after Neshek's wife gave birth, their baby boy died in his mother's arms. There was no immediate indication of what happened to Gehrig John Neshek. It was supposed to be a great time for both the family and the Athletics. On October 1, the Athletics clinched a playoff berth and later that night, Neshek's wife went into labor. Unfortunately, this is not the first time an athlete has gone through the horrible tragedy of losing a young child. Here is a look at five other athletes who had young children that died.
Matt Bryant was a kicker for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2008. Not long before the 2008 NFL season began, Melissa and Matt Bryant welcomed Matthew Tryson into the world. Sadly, three months later, Matthew Tryson died from SIDS. The day after his baby boy's funeral, Matt Bryant gave a great performance in a game and thought about his son throughout it.
Alisa Camplin won a gold medal in the Olympics for her aerial skiing skills in 2002. In 2011, she gave birth to Finnan. Sadly, Finnan was born six weeks early after it was discovered that he had a heart condition. Just 10 days after he was born, Finnan died from his heart condition. Camplin and her husband, Oliver Warner, set up a foundation in his honor to take donations for the Royal Children's Hospital's cardiology department.
In 2011, Skyler Bowen also died just 10 days after being born. Skyler and his twin, Stephen III, were born at approximately 24 weeks. The babies were born to Stephen Bowen and his wife, Tiffany. Stephen Bowen plays in the NFL for the Washington Redskins. Though it happened a couple of months before the football season started, Stephen Bowen seemed determined to play for his son.
Keli Lane was a rising star in Australian water polo. In 1996, when Lane was 21, she gave birth to a baby girl named Tegan. Tegan disappeared shortly after she was born. Despite the fact that the baby was never found, the court felt that there was enough evidence to convict Lane of murdering the infant. In 2011, she was sentenced to 18 years in prison. She will be eligible for parole in 2023.
In 2005, Pavol Demitra's wife, Maja, gave birth to the couple's twins. The boy was named Tobias and the girl was named Zara. Tobias died not long after he was born.
