Defending champion Hee Young Park and American Michelle Wie opened with 6-under-par 65s to take the first-round lead in the Manulife Financial LPGA Classic on Thursday in Waterloo, Ontario.

Park played in the afternoon and finished her round with six birdies and no bogeys on the par-71 Gray Silo Golf Course. The South Korean won the championship last year on the third hole of a playoff with Angela Stanford.

"I think 6 under par (is) pretty good position," Park said. "Still three more rounds left, so going to keep saying keep patient."

Wie had seven birdies, including three of her last four holes, and one bogey in the morning. She has one win this year on the LPGA Tour that came in April in Hawaii.

"I was early off and I just wanted to make a lot of birdies early on," Wie said. "My 6 under today, you know, it's not enough. I need to keep making birdies for the rest of the weekend."

Shanshan Feng of China was alone in third at 5-under 66. She was followed by countrywoman Xi Yu Lin and American Cristie Kerr at 4-under 67. A large group was at 68.

"I still have things to work on, but pretty pleased," Kerr said.

Stacy Lewis, who ascended to the No. 1 workd ranking with her victory on Sunday in New Jersey, began with a steady 2-under 69 that included two birdies and no bogeys. No. 2 Inbee Park also shot a 69 along with a host of others.
