Panthers' skid could bring changes

The SportsXchange

Florida Panthers management held a late-night meeting on Tuesday to discuss the future of the team, but no decisions were immediately made on the fate of coach Kevin Dineen.

General manager Dale Tallon promised to take action to alter the direction of the team after the Panthers dropped their sixth consecutive game -- a 4-3 overtime loss to the Edmonton Oilers.

"There will be changes ... ," Tallon told the Miami Herald. "I don't make rash decisions. None of us are happy. I have to fix this and I will. We're better than this."

According to the Herald, Tallon, minority owner Doug Cifu, assistant general manager Mike Santos and director of hockey operations Mike Dixon were part of the meeting. Tallon appeared frustrated after the loss to the Oilers, who came in with a five-game losing streak and were shut out in two weekend games.

The Herald reported that while Dineen is keeping his job for now and apparently has some support from Tallon, others in the organization are calling for a coaching change. Dineen, a longtime NHL player, is in the final year of his contract.

The Panthers finished last season with the worst record in the NHL and are off to a 3-8-4 start in 2013-14 as they head out on a three-game road trip to Boston, Ottawa and the New York Rangers. Florida plays eight of its next nine games on the road.
