The Panthers signed former 49ers DB Reggie Smith on Wednesday, the team announced.
A third-round pick in 2008, Smith played in all 16 games last season and recorded 16 tackles, one interception and three passes defensed.
"Reggie has been on our radar since the beginning of free agency and is a player we think can come in and compete at safety," Panthers general manager Marty Hurney said. "We brought him in for a visit Tuesday, and it worked out. He is another player we've added to increase the competition."
He started the final seven games of the 2010 season at strong safety. Smith has 29 special-teams tackles in 44 career games.
The way we see it
The Panthers added ex-Ravens S Haruki Nakamura earlier in free agency, so they will have players with the ability to push Sherrod Martin for a starting spot opposite Charles Godfrey at safety. Smith and Nakamura will, at minimum, provide solid depth and bolster special teams.
