In January, Florida’s Jonathan Marchessault had a front-row seat when Mikael Backlund scored 13 seconds apart in Calgary’s 5-2 win over the Panthers.

On Thursday, Marchessault found himself on the right side of the highlight reel by notching his 24th and 25th goals of the season an apt 26 seconds apart in Florida’s 3-1 win over the Coyotes.

It’s an impressive feat for the Panthers’ breakout sniper, who has more than tripled his goal production from a year ago and sits third on the team with 47 points.

As impressive as it was, Marchessault’s quick-strike time is well behind Backlund’s and light years away (relatively speaking) from Taylor Hall’s eight-second pair in 2013, Nathan Gerbe’s five-second feat in 2011 and Deron Quint’s record-tying four-second set in 1995, matching the O.G. Nels Stewart, who first did it with the Montreal Maroons in 1931.

But more important than some trivial time trial, Marchessault’s two goals helped the Panthers secure a big two points, keeping their razor thin playoff hopes alive for another day.
