Padres pick up Black's options for 2013 and 2014

Bud Black recently completed his sixth season as the San Diego Padres' manager, and he has yet to guide the team to the postseason.

He'll get at least two more chances to reach the playoffs after the Padres picked up his contract options for 2013 and 2014 on Monday.

"Buddy has a keen insight into team dynamics and creates a great environment for the players and coaching staff," Padres general manager Josh Byrnes said in a statement. "He is a gifted leader with a terrific mind for the game and a genuine interest and curiosity related to all areas of our organization."

Since taking over the team prior to the 2007 season, Black has a 464-509 record (.577). He was selected the National League Manager of the Year in 2010, when the Padres finished two games behind the San Francisco Giants in the NL West.

San Diego went 76-86 last season, finishing 18 games back of the division-champion Giants.

"I am honored and humbled by the faith Josh and our ownership team have shown in me, the coaching staff and our players," Black said, according to MLB.com. "I am extremely proud to be part of this organization, and I'm excited to continue working with ownership and our baseball operations team toward achieving our ultimate goal: bringing a championship to the great city and fans of San Diego."
