Padres' Headley to miss 2-3 weeks with calf injury

A troublesome calf injury forced San Diego Padres third baseman Chase Headley to the disabled list on Friday.

Headley, who missed most of spring training with a right calf strain, reinjured it during Thursday's 4-3 victory over the Washington Nationals while exiting the batter's box on a flyout during his second-inning at-bat. He is expected to miss two to three weeks.

"As I came out of the box, it just sort of grabbed at me a little," Headley said. "It's just a freak thing.

"My guess is it's not as severe as that was. I guess the silver lining is it will help the rest of my body heal."

Also bothered by knee and biceps injuries, Headley was batting .188 with two home runs and seven RBIs through 20 games.

To take his spot on the roster, the Padres called up shortstop Jace Peterson from Double-A San Antonio. Peterson, who has yet to play in the majors, could be used as a fill-in for Headley along with Alexi Amarista. Peterson saw some playing time at third during spring training.

Peterson was batting .311 with one home run and seven RBIs for San Antonio.
