SAN DIEGO -- Kyle Blanks smacked a three-run homer with two outs in the eighth as the San Diego Padres defeated the Arizona Diamondbacks 4-1 before 27,943 fans at Petco Park on Sunday.

Blanks drilled a 1-2 pitch off reliever David Hernandez (2-4) into the second deck of the Western Metal Supply building in left, allowing the Padres to sweep the three-game series. The win also pulled the Padres (35-34), who have won a season-high six in a row, to pull within two games of the first-place Diamondbacks (37-32) in the National League West.

Clayton Richard (2-5) gave up a run on seven hits in seven innings for the victory. Huston Street gave up a double to Miguel Montero before retiring Cody Ross and recording his second save in as many days and his 13th of the season.

Arizona starter Ian Kennedy was pitching for the first time since Tuesday's bench-clearing brawl in Dodger Stadium. Like he performed against the Dodgers before chaos broke out, Kennedy pitched well against the Padres, but didn't figure in the decision. Kennedy worked six innings, allowing a run on four hits with six strikeouts and a walk.

He went 2-for-2 at the plate against Richard, including an RBI single to center that gave the Diamondbacks a 1-0 lead with one out in the third. But they failed to score again.

Will Venable tied the score with a solo shot to right-center, estimated at 429 feet, to lead off the bottom of the inning. Venable's nine home runs are tops on the Padres, with eight of them coming at Petco.

It stayed that way until Blanks delivered his game-winning home run.
