SAN DIEGO -- Nick Hundley's RBI single with two outs in the 15th inning lifted the San Diego Padres to a 3-2 victory over the Chicago Cubs on Sunday at Petco Park.

Logan Forsythe reached on a single with one out in the 15th before Ronny Cedeno grounded out. The Cubs intentionally walked Alexi Amarista before Hundley delivered the game-winning hit to center.

Dale Thayer (2-3) gave up two hits and a walk in his lone inning but came away with the victory.

The Cubs' eighth pitcher, Hector Rondon (2-1), allowed a run on four hits in 1 2/3 innings.

The Padres (59-71) took two of three from the Cubs (55-75) in the series.

The game was scoreless before the Cubs ended the drought in bizarre fashion in the 13th.

Pinch hitter Darnell McDonald singled to open the inning and advanced to third on Starlin Castro's single to right. After Anthony Rizzo drew a walk to load the bases, Nate Schierholtz hit a grounder to first base. San Diego's Jesus Guzman attempted to throw out McDonald, who was racing home from third, but the ball nailed Schierholtz as the batter was running down the first base line.

The Cubs added a run on a sacrifice fly by Brian Bogusevic for a 2-0 lead heading into the bottom of the inning.

Chicago closer Kevin Gregg couldn't seal the win. He gave up an RBI triple to Cedeno, scoring Guzman, who had doubled. Gregg threw a wild pitch that allowed Cedeno to score to tie the score at 2 with two outs.

Padres starter Andrew Cashner, facing the club that drafted him in 2008 then traded him in a deal involving Rizzo before the 2012 season, gave up just two hits in seven innings, retiring 11 in a row until Welington Castillo singled with one out in the fifth. Cashner struck out seven, walked one and hit a batter in 108 pitches (78 strikes).

The Padres have given Cashner little support in his last three starts, producing just three runs in his past 25 innings.

Chris Rusin matched Cashner by shutting out San Diego for 6 1/3 innings on three hits with four walks and three strikeouts on only 87 pitches (47 strikes). He allowed an infield single to Chase Headley in the second, a base hit to Chris Denorfia in the third and a leadoff single to Cashner in the sixth.

Neither club had a runner reach third base until the 11th, when Castro walked and moved up two bases on a single by Schierholtz, the first Chicago hit since Castillo's in the fifth. But that was as far as Castro got, as Bogusevic flied out to left to end the inning.
