SAN DIEGO -- Eric Stults pitched a complete-game two-hitter, leading the San Diego Padres to a 2-1 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks before 23,364 fans at Petco Park on Friday night.

The win allowed the Padres (33-34) to close to within four games of the first-place Diamondbacks (37-30) in the National League West.

Stults gave up a leadoff double to Gerardo Parra and a walk to Paul Goldschmidt in the first before retiring the next 11 batters. After Miguel Montero reached on an error by first baseman Kyle Blanks in the fourth, Stults sat down the next 14 hitters before giving up a single to left to Willie Bloomquist in the ninth.

Stults (6-5) struck out three. It was the third complete game of his career.

He also tied a club record for assists with six held by Randy Jones (set July 1, 1979, against the Houston Astros) for assists in a nine-inning game.

Trevor Cahill was cruising with a shutout through five innings before the Padres loaded the bases with no outs in the sixth. Alexi Amarista walked, Chase Headley was hit by a pitch and Carlos Quentin beat out an infield single.

Cahill (3-8) struck out Blanks and Will Venable before giving up Logan Forsythe's single to left-center, scoring Amarista and Headley.

That two-run single ended a tough-luck outing for Cahill, who was born in nearby Oceanside and was a standout at Vista High in north San Diego County. He tied his career-best with 10 strikeouts in 5 2/3 innings. Cahill, who was 1-0 with a 0.60 ERA with 12 consecutive scoreless innings in two previous starts at Petco, allowed two runs on five hits with three walks and a hit batter.

The Diamondback scored their lone run of the game on a sacrifice fly by Cody Ross to score Gerardo Parra in the first inning.
