CHICAGO -- Yonder Alonso, Carlos Quentin and Nick Hundley each homered and had three hits, and the San Diego Padres pounded out 17 hits in a 13-7 victory over the Chicago Cubs on Tuesday night.
Right-hander Edinson Volquez (2-3) worked 5 2/3 innings for the win. He had just one damaging inning, giving up four runs in the fifth on two-run home runs by Luis Valbuena and Starlin Castro.
Volquez gave up seven hits and four runs while striking out three and walking three.
San Diego chased Cubs starter Edwin Jackson (0-4) in the fifth with a five-run outburst that gave the Padres an 8-0 lead.
By the sixth, the Padres had nine runs following Quentin's second home run of the year, a first-pitch solo shot off reliever Kameron Loe.
The Padres opened the scoring in the second as Jedd Gyorko drove home Alonso and Mark Kotsay with a double to right-center.
Quentin delivered a one-out sacrifice fly in the third, scoring Everth Cabrera to make it 3-0.
San Diego sent 10 men to the plate in the fifth.
Cabrera led off with a triple to center and came home on Chase Headley's one-out double to left. Headley scored on Quentin's double down the right field line. Alsono lined his third homer of the season to drive home Quentin. Volquez made it 8-1 with a two-out single to center to score Kotsay.
Jackson departed after giving up eight runs on 11 hits. He struck out six and walked two.
San Diego right-hander Andrew Cashner (1-1, 3.26 ERA) will face Chicago righty Scott Feldman (1-3, 3.92) Wednesday night. The four-game series concludes Thursday afternoon.
NOTES: Kotsay is 4-for-11 as a pinch hitter including a game-winning RBI. He's hitting .302 (58-of-192) off the bench for his career. ... Volquez helped pitch his native Dominican Republic to the World Baseball Classic title in March. He started three games in the tournament and went 1-0 with a 4.35 average. ... Padres RHP Tyson Ross made a rehab start Tuesday for Triple-A Tucson. He is on the disabled list due to a left shoulder impingement. ... 1B Anthony Rizzo topped the Cubs with eight April homers. ... The San Diego bullpen entered the game with a 1.59 ERA over the previous 15 games. Padres relievers allowed three runs in 3 1/3 innings Tuesday. ... The Cubs bullpen continues to improve, as evidence by a 1.39 ERA in its previous 12 games, including 10 scoreless outings. That effort has lowered the group's collective ERA from 6.06 to 3.84. However, Chicago relievers yielded five runs in 4 1/3 innings Monday. ... Cubs RHP Kyuji Fujikawa (right forearm strain) is scheduled to join Triple-A Iowa later this week for a rehab outing.
