Packers contemplate resting ailing Jennings vs. Colts

The SportsXchange

Both wins by the Packers this season have come with little to no contributions from Greg Jennings.

They very well could be playing to improve their shaky record thus far to 3-2 without their Pro Bowl receiver Sunday, when they play at the Indianapolis Colts.

Jennings suffered what could be a significant setback when he reinjured his groin in the first half of Green Bay's 28-27 win over the New Orleans Saints this past Sunday.

"It kind of flared up on him again in the game," head coach Mike McCarthy said Monday. "He could not open up all the way into a full stride."

Jennings' only catch in the game was a 9-yard touchdown pass from Aaron Rodgers in the opening minute of the second quarter that put the Packers ahead 14-7.

They gave away a 14-point lead and trailed 27-21 before Rodgers' fourth TD pass of the game - of 11 yards to Jordy Nelson with 7 minutes left in the final quarter - decided the outcome. All the while, Jennings was left to watch as he missed the final two-plus quarters.

He originally sustained the injury in the waning moments of Green Bay's season-opening loss to San Francisco and then missed the Week 2 win over Chicago.

"I would think we are back to where we were (with him) a couple weeks ago," McCarthy said. "We'll see how he is Wednesday. He'll go through the rehab process, and then we'll learn more there."

The Packers aren't ruling Jennings out for the matchup with the Colts on their indoor turf. McCarthy, though, said shutting Jennings down for the week is "definitely an option."

"We feel like the same thing has happened to him now twice," McCarthy said.

Jordy Nelson (eight catches, 93 yards), Randall Cobb (seven catches, 66 yards) and James Jones (five catches, 56 yards, two touchdowns) picked up the slack for the hobbled Jennings against the Saints.
