Packers' Benson placed on IR, but could return this season

Green Bay Packers running back Cedric Benson was placed on injured reserve Wednesday, but a "designated to return" tag was added, which means he might be back this season.

Benson sprained his left foot in Sunday's loss to the Indianapolis Colts, and by being placed on injured reserve, he must sit out eight games.

He's eligible to return in Week 14 against the Detroit Lions.

Packers coach Mike McCarthy said Wednesday he believes there's a good chance Benson will return for the final four games, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported.

"We feel that he can come back," McCarthy said. "A foot sprain is definitely a tough injury to come back from, but within that time frame, we feel that he definitely has a chance. ... He's a true pro. He's been excellent. He spends a lot of time in the weight room. I could see him being one of those guys that comes back and plays the last four weeks of the season."

Alex Green is expected to get the majority of the carries in Benson's absence.
