Pacers, Vogel announce extension

The SportsXchange

The Indiana Pacers announced head coach Frank Vogel signed a contract extension on Monday.

Vogel was hired Jan. 30, 2011, and is in his third season as head coach.

Entering Tuesday's home game with Miami, Vogel has a 62-38 record in 100 games as a head coach.

Vogel guided the Pacers to a 42-24 record, fifth-best in the NBA, and reached the Eastern Conferences semifinals before losing to eventual NBA champion Miami.

"This is a good deal for Frank and the franchise," said Donnie Walsh, the team's president of basketball operations. "Frank has done a great job turning our team around since he became coach and deserves the chance to continue the work he and his staff have started."

Retaining Vogel brings stability to the Pacers, who have restructured the front office since Larry Bird stepped away at the end of the 2011-12 season.

"I'm honored that Donnie, Kevin (General Manager Pritchard) and Mr. Simon (owner Herb Simon) have such belief and faith in me to be their coach in the foreseeable future. We've established a great connection with our community the last two years, both on and off the court and I look forward to continuing that."
