Pacers sign G Watson to bolster bench

The SportsXchange

The Indiana Pacers signed free agent guard C.J. Watson to a contract on Wednesday, the team announced.

No contract details were released by the team.

The six-year veteran played for the Brooklyn Nets last season and averaged 6.8 points and 2.0 assists in 80 games. He also has spent time with the Chicago Bulls and Golden State Warriors.

"C.J. Watson is exactly the type of player we were looking for when we said we needed to address our bench," Pacers president of basketball operations Larry Bird said. "He's experienced and he has been with winning teams, so he knows what it takes."

Watson played in Europe and the NBA Developmental League before landing a job with the Warriors in 2008.

"It's a good young team with a bright future and a shot to compete for a championship and I'm happy to be a part of that," Watson said of the Pacers.

Pacers coach Frank Vogel foresees Watson filling a role as a backup guard.

"We've looked at a lot of things since the season ended and upgrading our bench was one of those things," Vogel said.
