Cruz Azul will be without one of its star signings for the 2012-13 until early next year. Pablo Barrera, former West Ham and Zaragoza winger, has picked up a severe knee injury that will keep him out until March.

On the eve of Mexico's two World Cup qualifiers against Costa Rica, Barrera's removal from the squad was met with much skepticism, as the player had been constantly called up by manager Chepo de la Torre.

Barrera's agent, Jorge Berlanga, revealed that Barrera's ACL had torn and that the consequent surgery would keep him out an extended period of time.

Moments later, his club confirmed the news. "Pablo Barrera will be traveling to Guadalajara to schedule his surgery with Dr. Rafael Ortega," a press release read.

With Cruz Azul, Barrera had scored one goal in seven league games, a stunning free kick in the team's draw against Leon. Barrera debuted in 2007 with El Tri, scoring six goals in 51 matches with the national team.
