When most people think of visiting Florida in the winter, they think of warm weather, sand and surf. Although the state does have all of those things, it also has falling snow and outdoor ice skating rinks. With that said, here's a quick look at a few places in Florida where folks can enjoy a bit of winter fun:
St. Augustine Amphitheatre
Each year, the St. Augustine Amphitheatre in St. Augustine transforms itself into a winter wonderland. The facility features an outdoor ice skating rink, falling snow and a 140 foot long ice chute designed for sliding. Other amenities onsite include a s'mores fire pit, an obstacle course and a Blizzard Bounce House. It is slated to open in late November 2012 and run through January 2013. Admission is free. However, there are costs associated with participating in the onsite activities. Ice skating fees start at $12 per person and include ice skate rentals.
Central Park West Meadow
Central Park West Meadow is located in Winter Park. It features an outdoor ice skating rink that traditionally opens in mid November. The rink remains open through early January. Hours of operation vary based on the day of the week. Admission fees start at $10 per person and include ice skate rentals.
Celebration Town Center
Celebration Town Center is located in Celebration. It features an outdoor ice skating rink complete with nightly snow falls, holiday carolers and horse drawn carriage rides. Ice skaters may expect to pay a $10 per person fee to access the ice. The fee is inclusive of ice skate rental. On average, each ice skating session lasts 30 minutes. The rink opens daily November through January.
Apex Broadcasting Skating Pavilion
The Apex Broadcasting Skating Pavilion is located in the Village of Baytowne Wharf. It is an outdoor ice skating rink that opens in early November and runs through the end of January. Admission is $10 per person and exclusive of ice skate rentals. Ice skate rental prices start at $2 per person. Each session lasts 90 minutes. Hours of operation vary.
Curtis Hixon Waterfront Park
The Curtis Hixon Waterfront Park is located in Tampa. It features an outdoor ice skating rink that is expected to open in mid November 2012 and run through early January 2013. In addition to ice skating, visitors may also enjoy a complimentary movie on select evenings. Entrance onto the ice costs $10 per person and includes ice skate rental. Hours of operation vary and each skate session runs for 90 minutes.
