The New Orleans Saints entered the 2012 preseason with wide receiver being one of the stronger positions on the team. However, injuries to players competing for reserve roles continually shook things up throughout the five-game schedule. The team kept Joe Morgan, Courtney Roby and Adrian Arrington as the backups for regulars Marques Colston, Lance Moore and Devery Henderson. Arrington earned his spot despite not playing in the preseason due to injuries. Now he has missed Thursday's practice and may not be available for the regular season opener.
Other injured wide receivers this preseason included Nick Toon and Andy Tanner. Tanner was signed to the team's practice squad, while Toon was placed on injured reserve. Unlike Arrington, Toon did appear in the final preseason game, yet it was Arrington who was named to the final roster.
As a Saints fan, I still believe the team is fine at the wide receiver position. The top three on the depth chart are solid and will get most of the targets, along with tight end Jimmy Graham and running backs Darren Sproles and Pierre Thomas. Roby will contribute on special teams, but also showed he could play in the offense by catching 10 passes for 146 yards in the preseason. Morgan was impressive as well, amassing 15 receptions, 182 receiving yards and two touchdowns.
Arrington has proven that he is talented, but he has also had too much trouble getting onto the field and staying healthy. At this point he should definitely be considered as the sixth player on the depth chart. Furthermore, Tanner could make a strong case to be promoted from the practice squad.
I would love to see Arrington contributing to the Saints' offense, catching touchdown passes from quarterback Drew Brees and leading New Orleans to victory. Unfortunately I don't think that is happening anytime soon, and the team may need to look for a healthier option to fill the reserve wide receiver role.
