The New Orleans Saints Have Several Wide Receivers Fighting for a Spot: Fan's Take

Yahoo Contributor Network

The New Orleans Saints have three solid veteran wide receivers in Marques Colston, Lance Moore and Devery Henderson. However, the battle for the fourth slot will be very interesting this preseason. Below is a list of the players who have the best chance to begin the 2012 regular season as the team's fourth wide receiver.

Nick Toon

Toon is a talented rookie and should have the advantage to win this job. Unfortunately, he was injured and missed the Saints' first preseason game against the Arizona Cardinals and also may not play when the team faces the New England Patriots on Thursday, August 9. As a senior at Wisconsin last year, Toon totaled 64 catches, 926 yards and 10 touchdowns. Fans are looking forward to seeing Toon on the field with quarterback Drew Brees.

Courtney Roby

Roby has been contributing on special teams over the last four seasons. He may now have a shot to play wide receiver for the Saints and grabbed four catches for 54 yards against the Cardinals.

Adrian Arrington

Arrington has been with the Saints for a few years now and seemed to finally have an opportunity to contribute this year. Then the team announced that he has a knee injury before the Cardinals game on Sunday night. Whenever Dr. James Andrews is involved, the injury is likely serious. As a fan, I am not expecting to see Arrington soon.

Joseph Morgan

Morgan, who played at Illinois before transferring to Walsh, will get a lot of time in the preseason and could play his way onto the roster. He caught three passes for 35 yards against the Cardinals, but he also had a couple of drops. He can also contribute on special teams.

Andy Tanner

Tanner played at Midwestern State and looked great in the Saints' first game, catching four passes for 75 yards. He did cough up a fumble on a big hit, but luckily he came away uninjured. If he plays better than Morgan and avoids drops, Tanner may be able to stick with the team.

Toon's roster spot is likely secure, and Roby should be safe as a special teams player. But the Saints will keep at least five wide receivers and may go with six. If Arrington's injury is serious, Morgan and Tanner could be vying for not only a roster spot, but also a chance to be fourth on the wide receiver depth chart.
