With the March 15, 2012 trade deadline rapidly approaching in the NBA, the Orlando Magic have a big decision to make with Dwight Howard. Should the Orlando Magic trade Dwight Howard before the trade deadline? Or should they let him play out the season and become a free agent?
NBA Trade Deadline is March 15, 2012
If the Magic let Dwight Howard just become a free agent after the 2012 season they are taking a huge gamble that he would still sign with them over the summer. If Howard decides to play somewhere else, the Magic franchise would take a massive hit. Compounding the problem is the fact that Dwight Howard has the Magic in a great position to make the playoffs in 2012.
That means the Orlando Magic would not even have a decent draft pick for the 2012 NBA Draft. All the Magic would have is some cap room to sign a another free agent, but Dwight Howard would be the one free agent everyone wants.
Dwight Howard Requested a Trade to New Jersey Nets
I'm a New Jersey Nets fan in the NBA. Before the 2012 season began, Dwight Howard reportedly told the Orlando Magic he would like to be traded, and one of the teams he wanted to be traded to was the Nets.
As a Nets fan that was great news. We supposedly offered the Magic a trade package that included Brook Lopez and a bunch of first round draft picks we have stockpiled. But then Brook Lopez broke his foot in a preseason game, and there was no way the Magic were going to make that trade then.
With All-Star Game in Orlando, Magic Likely Reluctant to Trade Dwight Howard Until After the Game
As the season began, the Magic said they were going to keep Dwight Howard for this season. A lot of people think that the Magic have been holding off on trading Dwight Howard until after the all-star game, because the game is in Orlando, and it would have been embarrassing for Howard to play in the game with another team's uniform on.
Once the all-star game is over though, will the Orlando Magic trade Dwight Howard? In my opinion, they would be crazy not to trade him. If the Magic let Howard become a unrestricted free agent after the 2012 season and he goes somewhere else, the Magic franchise would probably take years to recover.
That's just too big a risk to take. As a Nets fan though, that is exactly what I hope happens. Because then we could sign Dwight Howard over the summer, along with Deron Williams, and be able to keep Brook Lopez too, as he will become a restricted free agent. That would make the Nets NBA title contenders.
After the Magic beat the Nets this past week on Wednesday, February 22, 2012, at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey, Dwight Howard went over and gave Nets part-owner Jay-Z a big hug. During the game, Nets fans chanted "We want Dwight" over and over. Dwight Howard said it was humbling the way the Nets fans treated him.
Orlando Magic Would Be Crazy to Not Trade Dwight Howard and Let Him Become Unrestricted Free Agent
Are the Orlando Magic really going to take the risk of letting Dwight Howard become a unrestricted free agent after the 2012 season and just walk away? I think that is highly unlikely, and unless the Magic can secure from Dwight Howard some kind of a commitment that he will sign with them, the Orlando Magic will trade Dwight Howard by March 15, 2012.
As a Nets fan, I hope the Magic trade Dwight Howard to the Nets. But it wouldn't bother me at all if they did let Dwight Howard become a free agent and he decided to sign with us over the summer, and then we keep Brook Lopez and all our first round draft picks too.
