Orioles acquire lefty reliever Romero

The SportsXchange

Left-handed reliever J.C. Romero is back with the Orioles organization after Baltimore acquired him Monday from the Cleveland Indians organization in exchange for minor league infielder Carlos Rojas.

Romero will be added to the Orioles' 25-man and 40-man rosters Tuesday, and he'll join Troy Patton to give the team a second left-handed reliever.

The 36-year-old veteran began the season with the St. Louis Cardinals, producing a 10.13 ERA and no decisions in 11 appearances before he was released in mid-May. He subsequently signed a minor league deal with the Orioles, and he went 1-0 with two saves a 2.51 ERA in 17 games (one start) for Triple-A Norfolk.

After opting out of his deal when he wasn't promoted to the majors at the All-Star break, Romero signed with Cleveland. He had one save and a 3.12 ERA in eight appearances for the Indians' Triple-A Columbus affiliate before Monday's trade.

Rojas, 28, had split the season between Double-A Bowie and Columbus. He hit a combined .226 with a .285 on-base percentage, a .248 slugging percentage, no homers and nine RBI in 48 games.
