Orioles 3B Machado opens season on DL

The SportsXchange

The Baltimore Orioles placed third baseman Manny Machado and outfielder Nolan Reimold on the 15-day disabled list before their season opener on Monday against the Boston Red Sox.

The Orioles also put Michael Almanzar and outfielder Francisco Peguero on the 15-day disabled list and right-hander Edgmer Escalona on the 60-day DL, and pitcher Mike Belfiore was designated for assignment.

The moves enabled the Orioles to add reliever Evan Meek and outfielder Delmon Young to the 40-man roster.

Machado had surgery to repair a torn medial patellofemoral ligament in his left knee after he was injured while running the bases during a Sept. 24 game against the Tampa Bay Rays. Reimond is working his way back from neck surgery.

The 21-year-old Machado suffered a setback when scar tissue broke up. He is still rehabbing the knee, but the Orioles hope to have him back by the end of April.

Machado batted .283 with 14 home runs, 71 RBIs and a league-leading 51 doubles last year in his first full season in the major leagues. He also won a Gold Glove.

Among the players who made the Orioles' 25-man Opening Day roster were infielders Steve Lombardozzi and Johnathan Schoop.
