DETROIT -- Adam Jones hit a tie-breaking sacrifice fly with one out in the eighth inning and Chris Tillman checked Detroit on five hits Sunday to help the Baltimore Orioles hand the Tigers their first loss of the season, 3-1.

Right fielder Nick Markakis tripled into the right-field corner with one out and center fielder Jones won a battle with right-hander Justin Verlander (0-1) to drive a ball into deep left center that scored the tie-breaking run.

Catcher Matt Wieters added a solo home run, his first, off right-hander Al Alburquerque in the ninth to make the score 3-1.

Verlander only allowed five hits, walked two and struck out three in eight innings.

The right-handed Tillman (1-0) got the first out of the ninth but first baseman Victor Martinez doubled down the first base line and right-hander Tommy Hunter was brought in to get his second save. Tillman issued only one walk and struck out five in his 8 1/3 innings.

DH Nelson Cruz boomed a two-out RBI double into the gap in right center to tie the score, 1-1, in the sixth. Jones had doubled over center fielder Austin Jackson's head with one out.

Right fielder Torri Hunter got Detroit off to a 1-0 lead with a one-out solo home run in the fourth inning, his third of the season. Hunter has a home run in each of the last three Tigers' games.

That gave Verlander a total of 1,675 strikeouts. ... 3B Manny Machado, out since late last season due to left knee surgery, had some light baseball work Thursday and felt no negative effects Friday. "His next step will be to sprint full speed and repeat it the next day," manager Buck Showalter said. ... The Tigers will use Martinez at first and catcher in games on the West Coast (Dodgers, Padres) this week because they can't have a DH in NL cities. ... SS Ryan Flaherty of the Orioles singled in the ninth to break a 17 at-bat hitless streak from the start of the season.
