The Olympic mid and long distance races include the 800 meter, 1500 meter, 5000 meter and the 10,000 meter races. All of these respective distances are run on the track in the assigned venue at the Olympic Games.

The rules

All of the mid and long distance events incorporate both men and women. All distance races must start with a standing start. In these races competitors are not allowed to use starting blocks like in the sprint races. The 800 meter and 1500 meter races have round one, semi-finals and then finals. The 5000 meter run has round one and a finals race. The 10,000 meter race is a finals only race.

The format

The 800 meters and the 1500 meters are both consider mid distance event track races.

The 5000 meter and the 10,000 races are both consider long distance event track races.

The race

The 800 meter race is two complete laps around the track. It starts at the finish line and ends at the finish line. The runners must stay in their assigned lanes until they pass the first turn.

The 1500 meter race is 3.5 laps around the track. It starts directly across the track from the finish line on or about the ending of the curve and ends at the finish line. It is a waterfall start on a curved line marked on the track. Runners may cut in at any time.

The 5000 meter race is 12.5 laps around the track. This race is started on a waterfall line on the opposite side of the track. It is completed at the finish line.

The 10,000 meter race is the longest track race that is run. It is 25 laps around the track. It is started at the finish line with a waterfall start and completed as the finish line as well.
