Old Dominion said goodbye to the Colonial Athletic Association with an unexpected, emphatic bang Saturday.
Rolling to a 43-26 halftime lead and holding off a late run, the last-place Monarchs finished their season by dumping CAA regular season champion Northeastern 81-74 at Matthews Arena in Boston.
ODU (5-25, 3-15 CAA) punished the Huskies inside, scoring 56 points in the paint. It hit 19-of-30 shots from the field in the first half, then started the second half by canning 7-of-9 to open up a 25-point lead with 11:30 left in the game.
Richard Ross paced the balanced Monarchs with 17 points and nine rebounds, while DeShawn Painter and Donte Hill added 15 points apiece. Keenan Palmore and Dimitri Batten each tallied 13 points.
Jonathan Lee scored a game-high 26 points and Joel Smith netted 19 for Northeastern (19-11, 14-4), which owns the top seed for next weekend's CAA Tournament in Richmond, Va. ODU is banned from the event because it's leaving the CAA on July 1 to join Conference USA.
