Oilers trade Smid to Flames, sign Bryzgalov

The Edmonton Oilers traded defenseman Ladislav Smid to the Calgary Flames on Friday for forward Roman Horak and goalie prospect Laurent Brossoit and also signed free-agent goaltender Ilya Bryzgalov to a one-year contract.

The 27-year-old Smid had two points for the Oilers this season and was averaging 18 minutes per night in 17 games. It is possible that Smid could fill a spot with the Flames left when Mark Giordano went down last week with a broken ankle.

Smid, a former first-round draft pick, had spent all of his eight-year career with the Oilers. He signed a four-year, $14 million extension last season. Shipping him to the Flames cleared $3.5 million in salary-cap space needed to bring in Bryzgalov, according to reports.

The 33-year-old Bryzgalov has not played in the NHL this season after the Philadelphia Flyers bought out the remaining seven years of his nine-year, $51 million contract.

Bryzgalov struggled to a 19-17-3-1 record in 2013. His best season came with the Phoenix Coyotes in 2009-10 when he posted 42 victories and eight shutouts with a 2.29 goals-against average and a .920 save percentage.

"He has turned down one NHL offer recently and will wait until the right opportunity presents itself," Bryzgalov's agent, Ritch Winter, recently told ESPN.com. "There is no rush. He is in great shape and ready to go when the right opportunity arises."

Horak, 22, split time between Calgary and AHL Abbotsford during the last two seasons. In 82 career NHL games, he has 18 points.

Brossoit, 20, has bounced between Abbotsford and ECHL Alaska this season.

The Oilers also signed goaltender Chet Pickard to a minor-league contract.
