The Edmonton Oilers beat the deadline Sunday, re-signingleft wing Ryan Smyth to a two-year, $4.5 million contract, the team announced.

Smyth, 36, who was acquired last July from the Los Angeles Kings, would have become an unrestricted free agent at noon EST.

The Oilers captain had 46 points last season, including 19 goals, in 82 games. He also is known as the six-time captain for Canada's national team.

The Smyth signing comes one day after the team won the derby defenseman Justin Schultz, a free agent college hockey player in high demand.

Schultz will get two-year deal for $925,000 per season with a signing bonus of $92,500, according to Sportsnet.ca. He also was sought by the New York Rangers, Toronto Maple Leafs, Ottawa Senators, Vancouver Canucks and Minnesota Wild.

Also, the rebuilding Oilers picked right wing Nail Yakupov with the first selection in the NHL Draft 10 days ago.
