Fashion is always one aspect of every Olympics. The 2012 Olympic Games are no different. Here is a look at the top 10 oddest or most controversial uniforms and outfits from this year's Olympics.
It's a bad situation when even the athletes are complaining that uniforms are disappointing. Some media outlets have compared the Spanish red and yellow uniforms to outfits worn by those in the fast food industry. Those involved in choosing the uniforms defended the choice based on the fact that the uniforms had been free.
Before the Olympic Games began, there was uproar over the uniforms for the United States' athletes. There was nothing wrong about the look of the outfits, but the clothing was made in China. Though nothing could be done to remake the uniforms for this year, there is a commitment to have the 2014 uniforms made in the USA.
Egyptian athletes were initially given counterfeit uniforms from a Chinese distributor. It was only after international and legal pressure mounted that the country replaced the fake goods for the real ones. The real ones were handed out just in time for the opening ceremonies.
Russian Synchronized Swimmers
With swimsuits that featured giant faces that mirrored the faces of the synchronized swimmers wearing them, the Russians topped the competition for duets. The swimsuits were fitting for the routine, but that does not reduce the level of disturbance of the whole scene. The win seemed well deserved.
As a rhythmic gymnast, Caroline Weber can wear something a little bolder than most of the athletes at the Olympics. The Austrian gymnast chose a colorful and fancy looking leotard that was a play on the traditional dirndl for her ball routine. Though it was an odd choice, it was a beautiful and detailed leotard.
Women's Beach Volleyball
Women's beach volleyball players are notorious for wearing uniforms that consist of a bikini top and bottom. Some players found the climate too cold for this outfit and needed to add long sleeves or pants to the uniforms. The uniforms began looking unfortunate when some athletes added the long sleeves under the original bikini tops so that the team's country was still on display during a match.
Jonathan Hall, who competes in the 10m shooting competition, asked his mother to create his outfit after finding others too difficult to shoot in. His mother is an accomplished seamstress. According to Hall, she created the perfect outfit.
USA Women's Gymnastic Leotards
Though the leotards looked amazing on television, some believe that there was a problem with the United States women's gymnasts' uniforms. There were glittery red leotards, glittery white and silver leotards and hot pink leotards. Some people questioned whether the uniforms were patriotic enough as typically the leotards incorporate the flag.
The volunteers for the 2012 Olympics will standout from the crowd. They wear khaki pants, grey sneakers and a jacket. The dark purple jacket is highlighted by spots of bright red on the cuffs, piping and the collar. The collar and cuffs are wide and both feature gold buttons. The outfit also has a matching hat.
The official volleyball cheerleaders for the 2012 Olympic Games in London, England, wear some unusual looking outfits. One outfit consists of a shirt and shorts that are patterned with black, pink and white chunks of color on the front. The back has pink and black stripes. Another outfit has white and black shorts and a white shirt with a black animal face. Black fishnet stockings, a pink sports bra and pink wrist bands complete the outfit.
