O'Brien picks McGloin as Penn State's starting quarterback

The SportsXchange

First-year Penn State coach Bill O'Brien announced Friday he has selected Matt McGloin as his starting quarterback.

McGloin, a senior, beat out sophomore Paul Jones, who has been academically ineligible the past two seasons, and Rob Bolden, who had started the past two season openers.

With 10 starts in three seasons, he has completed 243 of 448 passes for 3,119 yards and 22 touchdowns. He is a former walk-on.

O'Brien said McGloin won the job with his consistency in spring practice.

Also, O'Brien said cornerback Curtis Drake will not be back this season. Drake and McGloin were in a locker room fight late last year, leaving McGloin with a concussion. The injury kept McGloin from playing in the TicketCity Bowl.

O'Brien was hired earlier this year from his job as offensive coordinator of the NFL New England Patriots. He has inherited a program that was racked with scandal after the indictment of former assistant coach Jerry Sandusky on alleged child molestation charges. Legendary coach Joe Paterno was fired during last season and died soon after from complications related to lung cancer.
