The Oakley World Pro Junior Championship resumed on Wednesday, October 10, 2012 in Bali, Indonesia. The women were greeted with waves in the three to four foot range. Multiple surf heats were completed. Here's a brief rundown on some of the latest results:
Round 2 Results
The day's surf action began with a Round 2 matchup between Maud Le Car (FRA), Minato Takahashi (JPN) and Rosanny Alvarez (VEN). Maud Le Car won the surf heat with 11 points. Her best wave was a 6.33 point ride. It was one of the highest wave scores of the round. It featured big turns and a solid cutback. Unfortunately for Maud Le Car, she went on to lose her Round 3 surf heat against Ellie-Jean Coffey (AUS).
The highest wave score of the round was earned by Mahina Maeda (HAW) during her Heat 2 matchup against Juliana Meneghel (BRA) and Nao Omura (JPN). She won the surf heat after posting a 6.93 point ride and a 6 point ride. Mahina Maeda went on to best Sarah Baum (ZAF) in Round 3, Heat 1.
Round 3 Results
The stand out surfer of Round 3 was Nikki Van Dijk (AUS). During her Heat 8 matchup against Brianna Cope (HAW), Van Dijk fired off three impressive rides. Her best one was a 9.50 point ride. It featured a trio of massive turns, great rail work and a nice cutback. I was really impressed with her performance. Nikki Van Dijk won the surf heat with 17.33 points. She went on to narrowly beat Alessa Quizon (HAW) in the quarterfinals.
The highest surf heat scores of the quarterfinals occurred in Heat 4. It was a real nail biter. The matchup featured surfers Nikki Van Dijk (AUS) and Alessa Quizon (HAW). The two women traded blows throughout the entire surf heat. Alessa Quizon's best maneuvers resulted in an 8.47 point ride. She completed the surf heat with 15.30 points. Nikki Van Dijk's best ride garnered her 9.33 points. She won the surf heat with 15.50 points.
The women's semifinals kicked off with a surf heat between Bianca Buitendag (ZAF) and Quincy Davis (USA). Davis put up a valiant fight against Buitendag. However, it was not enough to secure her success. Bianca Buitendag managed to fire off a 9.17 point ride and win the heat with 15.60 points. Buitendag is expected to face off against Nikki Van Dijk (AUS) later this week in the final.
The Oakley World Pro Junior Championship is expected to resume on Thursday, October 11, 2012. Round 2 of the men's surfing competition and the women's final remain undecided. The competition's waiting period is scheduled to end on Wednesday, October 17, 2012. Surf fans will be able to watch all the remaining heats on the event's website.
