COMMENTARY | The return that has been several years in the making becomes official on August 3. This country's most famous and most recognized club soccer brand is back, and fans throughout the United States will have a chance to experience the reboot.
It was announced back in June that every New York Cosmos home North American Soccer League match would be televised on the ONE World Sports network. While that station is currently available via four different TV providers as of August 1, millions of customers in the NYC/NJ area cannot watch it in their homes. Verizon FIOS is just one provider that currently doesn't carry OWS. That's no longer a problem for such individuals who wish to watch the Cosmos, however, thanks to a deal that was announced on the first of this month.
SNY, the local TV home of both the New York Mets and New York Jets (the station also airs sports talk shows, "Racing from the Meadowlands" and other programming), will air all seven of New York's home matches in 2013, starting on August 3 when the Cosmos host the Ft. Lauderdale Strikers. Three of those games, this coming Saturday's, New York's August 24 game against San Antonio Scorpions, and the Cosmos vs. Carolina RailHawks match on October 12, will air live. The other four will be broadcast on SNY via tape-delay.
The New York Red Bulls of Major League Soccer are, when not on national TV, featured on local sports stations MSG and MSG+. That won't be the case on August 3, however, as their match against Sporting Kansas City will air live on NBC Sports Network. Coverage of that match gets underway at 6:30 p.m., meaning that the Cosmos and Red Bulls will be fighting for local viewers at the same time.
Those who don't have access to OWS on television won't find themselves in the dark for Saturday's NASL season debut. The OWS Twitter page posted that the New York vs. Ft. Lauderdale match will be shown live via the station's online stream. That stream will be available for free for all US residents.
Any advertised rivalry between the Red Bulls and Cosmos has been, up to this point, more cosmetic than real. That changes on the first Saturday evening of August 2013. A US soccer brand that is known all around the world is really back, and this time not just to sell some shirts and track jackets. They won't be facing off head-to-head on the pitch, but the Red Bulls and Cosmos will absolutely be competing against each other on Saturday.
The region's soccer turf war is set to begin.
