Cam Newton starred at Auburn wearing No. 2 on his jersey – the digit he wanted when he arrived in the NFL.
But after the number became available with the Carolina Panthers this offseason, Newton made the decision to stick with No. 1 he wore as a rookie. Scott Fowler of the Charlotte Observer reports No. 2 opened this spring up when reserve quarterback Jimmy Clausen switched from it to No. 7 after longtime punter Jason Baker was let go. Clausen had blocked Newton from wearing No. 2 last year.
The opportunity was there for Newton to seize No. 2 as the NFL made the switch from Reebok to Nike jerseys, but he chose to stick with No. 1. Now, new punter Nick Harris has claimed No. 2 and the oodles of Panthers and Newton fans that plunked down hard-earned cash for a No. 1 jersey last season won’t watch the quarterback play in a different-numbered uniform this year.
