BROOKLYN, N.Y. -- The goal of Brigham Young and No. 20 Notre Dame in Saturday's consolation game of the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic at Barclays Center was to salvage something positive from a weekend that wasn't going to work out the way anyone had planned. The Irish accomplished that as guard Jerian Grant scored a season-high 19 points and Jack Cooley delivered another double-double with 19 points and 12 rebounds in a 78-68 victory. Notre Dame had fallen into the consolation game after letting an eight-point lead slip away with four minutes to play the previous night against Saint Joseph's (Pa.). Down seven early in the second half Saturday, Notre Dame led by as many as 10 before closing it out from the free-throw line by hitting 10 of 12 the final 1:32 Tyler Haws led Brigham Young (2-2) with 21 points. Notre Dame (3-1) delivered a 15-2 run, including 12 unanswered, that was kick-started by its zone defense. That flipped a seven-point deficit into a six-point lead late in the second half. The Irish were able to get four consecutive stops out of their 2-3 zone. Brigham Young led by as many as seven twice in the second half before being unable to decipher Notre Dame's zone defense, which produced three stops in a row and helped the Irish tie it at 49 with 11:56 remaining following a 3-pointer by Eric Atkins. The first half had all the energy and enthusiasm of an insurance seminar as both teams tried to shake losses from the previous night. Brock Zylstra scored a team-high eight points, including a pair of 3-pointers, as Brigham Young led 32-31 after 20 minutes that featured seven lead changes and six ties. Cooley had 12 points and 10 rebounds in the first half to lead the Irish, who struggled shooting and also committed seven turnovers.
