Two weeks ago on Monday Night Raw, then-general manager A.J. Lee was forced to step down due to allegations that she was fraternizing with a Raw superstar, later revealed to be John Cena. On that show, it was announced that Vickie Guerrero was taking over in charge of Raw and, since then, she has made it a point to expose the alleged affair between A.J. and Cena.
While the storyline suffers from some obvious holes (such as why "fraternization" between a general manager and superstar is all of the sudden grounds for dismissal, and why Cena would wear his "Cena-gear" on dinner dates), it is not all bad. In fact, here are three good consequences of the bizarre love storyline.
1.The Elevation of Dolph Ziggler.
This past Monday on Raw, it became apparent that this storyline may be leading towards a feud between John Cena and Dolph Ziggler. As Cena and Guerrero bantered back and forth, Ziggler interjected to mock Cena in the ring. Ziggler won the money in the bank briefcase this past summer, and has effectively been stuck in neutral waiting for the appropriate time to cash in the title shot. Hopefully a program with Cena will build some momentum for him, leading to his probable run with the World Heavyweight Title when he decides to cash in the briefcase.
2. A Reboot For A.J. Lee.
Early in 2012, A.J. was one of the hottest up and coming stars in the WWE, playing the unstable diva role to perfection in a story involving Daniel Bryan, CM Punk, and Kane. In fact, she became so popular so quickly that Vince McMahon thought it was appropriate that she be inserted as the Raw general manager. Unfortunately, that turned out to be a large mistake, as it forced A.J. to abandon the "crazy" gimmick in exchange for an ill-fated attempt to come off more straight-laced. With this, she lost most of her momentum and was rightfully pulled as GM in short order. Hopefully this storyline will allow her to re-capture some of her craziness that made her so popular in the first place, and justify her continued prominent role on Raw.
3. John Cena Remains Out of the Title Picture.
Most importantly, this storyline keeps John Cena busy and out of the main event picture. Throughout the better part of the last few years, Cena has been in virtually every pay per view main event. In addition, it seemed like a foregone conclusion that he would win back the WWE Title from CM Punk and head towards a Wrestlemania match as the champion. This impending feud with Guerrero and Ziggler at least delays that, and allows CM Punk to have a WWE Title match against The Rock at the Royal Rumble. In addition, unlike the other Cena storylines in 2012, such as those against The Big Show, Brock Lesnar and John Laurenitis, this story will allow CM Punk and the WWE Title to become the focal point of the main event, as Cena and Ziggler will likely not be elevated over Punk taking on Ryback and then The Rock.
