Northeast Ohio’s Best Casual Hiking Spots for Warm Weather

Yahoo Contributor Network

Are you planning on vacationing in Northeast Ohio this summer? Do you enjoy talking leisurely hikes? If so, you may want to add a visit to one of the area's state parks to your itinerary. Based on my experience, there are several parks located in the area that are well suited for a warm weather trek. Here's a quick look at a handful of them:

Mohican State Park

Mohican State Park is located in Ashland County. It features more than 7 miles of warm weather trails. I'd suggest that stalwart hikers contemplate taking the 2 mile long Hemlock Gorge Trail. The Big Lyons Falls and the Little Lyons Falls are modest but noteworthy. There is also a recess cave located behind the Big Lyons Falls. The best time to see the waterfalls is after a heavy rain. Additional park highlights include a covered bridge, an old grist mill and river views.

Portage Lakes State Park

Portage Lakes State Park is located in Summit County. It features approximately 8 miles of trails. I'd recommend that summer hikers contemplate taking the 5 mile long Shoreline Trail. It offers views of Rex Lake, Latham Bay and Turkeyfoot Lake. There are also several picnic areas located along the way. Flora and fauna hikers are apt to encounter include wood ducks, Canadian geese, cranberries and skunk cabbage.

Quail Hollow State Park

Quail Hollow State Park is located in Stark County. It features more than 8 miles of summer trails. I'd recommend that trekkers consider exploring the Peatland Trail and the Tall Grass Prairie Trail. Creatures that hikers are likely to encounter on their treks include red-winged blackbirds, gray foxes and squirrels. Blazing star, highbush blueberries and tall coreopsis are also found within the confines of the park.

Nelson Kennedy Ledges State Park

Nelson Kennedy Ledges State Park is located in Portage County. It features roughly three miles of warm weather trails. I'd recommend taking the White Trail. It leads to Minnehaha Falls. The paths can be quite rocky and challenging in spots. Other park highlights include the Devil's Ice Box, Cascade Falls and ample wildflowers. Hikers are likely to catch sight of red trillium, Solomon's seal and maple leaf viburnum.

West Branch State Park

West Branch State Park is located in Portage County as well. It features more than 20 miles of trails, many of which are suitable for warm weather hikes. I'd suggest that hikers explore the Buckeye Trail. The park is also an excellent spot to catch sight of doves and ring-necked pheasants.
