Senior guard Pendarvis Williams scored 27 points, leading a late rally in regulation and hitting 5 of 6 free throws in the final 10 seconds of overtime to lift Norfolk State to an 86-82 victory Sunday at Boston University.
Senior guard Anell Alexis hit a go-ahead 3-pointer in overtime and added a pair of free throws with 28 seconds left on his way to 16 points. Senior guard Malcolm Hawkins added 17 points and four steals as Norfolk State (8-3) won its third straight and notched its first non-conference road win in more than a year.
In dropping its third straight game, Boston U. (6-5) got 16 points, 12 assists and eight rebounds from sophomore point guard Maurice Watson, Jr.
John Papale hit six 3-pointers and finished with 16 points for the Terriers who shot 54.9 percent from the floor and hit 13 of 28 shots from beyond the arc, but were haunted by 18 turnovers.
The costliest came at the end of regulation when Williams heisted the inbounds pass and made a layup to ignite an 8-0 run in which Williams scored the final six points, including a driving, pull-up jumper with 10 seconds left that sent the game to the extra session.
Reserve forward Travis Robinson scored five of his 14 points early in overtime to keep Boston U. close. But over the final 2:13 Norfolk State scored 17 points on its final eight possessions. Three-pointers by Williams and Alexis opened the run, then the Spartans remained true at the free-throw line, hitting 9 of 10 in the final 28 seconds.
Williams scored 14 of his points over the game's final 6:05. Norfolk State finished 50 percent from the floor.
Williams also started off hot, hitting a 3-pointer to trigger a 9-0 run to open the game. But Boston College answered with 3-pointers from Dom Morris, Papale, and Watson to give the Terriers an 11-9 lead and establish the see-saw nature of the game in which the lead changed hands 10 times.
