Niners TE Davis not likely to stay dormant for long

Our sources close to the 49ers believe it would be a big mistake to make too big a deal out of TE Vernon Davis’ meager numbers in recent weeks.

There was good reason to wonder just how frustrated Davis might be after his streak of 58 consecutive games with a reception was snapped in the Week Seven win over the Seahawks, when he wasn’t even targeted on any of Alex Smith’s 23 passes. One week earlier, against the same Giants team that he punished in last year’s NFC title game to the tune of 3-112-2 receiving, Davis was held in check (3-37) in the worst loss of the Jim Harbaugh era.

But the way we keep hearing it, Davis is at least putting up a good front, claiming that, as long as the team continues to win, he is OK with a lesser receiving role.

“He did say it would be difficult for him if the team wasn’t winning,” one team source said. “There’s no doubt that he’s still Alex Smith’s main target. He might not get back to where he was at the end of last year (10-292-4 in the postseason), but he’s still too essential a part of the offense.”

While Davis hasn’t been getting the ball as much, he still has managed to make a big impact as a blocker.

Just ask fellow TE Delanie Walker, who credited the block Davis made for enabling him to score a 12-yard TD in the win over Seattle.

“If he didn’t make that block, I probably would have never got in,” Walker said. “It was a great block, got me around the corner and got me in for a touchdown.”

The extra coverage Davis has been receiving is another positive worth noting.

“As big a reason as any for the middle opening up for the run game against Seattle was the fact the Seahawks had a linebacker and a safety on Vernon much of the time,” the team source said.
