COMMENTARY | News recently broke that the NBA may be considering having the Miami Heat and Brooklyn Nets wear jerseys with players' nicknames on them for one of their four games in the 2013-14 season.
Although purists are not happy about the NBA's latest attempt to become hipsters, the rumor has spawned a debate among NBA fans about what nickname each player would put on his respective jersey. While I am not particularly crazy about the idea, there are far more important problems in the world than NBA nicknames on jerseys to get riled up about. But as a New Orleans Pelicans fan, I feel that if this does come to pass, then all NBA teams should have the same privilege.
Take a closer look at what nicknames should appear on the New Orleans Pelicans jerseys.
Darius Miller: "Miller Time"
The NBA is all about corporate sponsorships and advertising. So this nickname on Darius Miller's jersey could be an easy way for the Pelicans to get a new lucrative sponsor on board. When Darius Miller checks in for New Orleans, it's "Miller Time."
Tyreke Evans: "Wreak Havoc"
Tyreke Evans is one of the Pelicans' biggest additions for the 2013-14 NBA season. The former NBA Rookie of the Year will likely start at SF for New Orleans. Pelicans fans are certainly hoping that Evans will "Wreak Havoc" this season.
Al-Farouq Aminu: "Farouq Is On Fire"
Al-Farouq Aminu has improved considerably in New Orleans under the watchful eye of Pelicans head coach Monty Williams. With an immense storehouse of raw talent and ability, Aminu is capable of igniting at any given moment for the Pelicans.
Austin Rivers: "Mississippi Rivers"
With a name like Rivers, this jersey nickname would be a natural for the Pelicans' second-year player. New Orleans fans once nicknamed Chris Paul and Tyson Chandler "The Crescent City Connection" after our Mississippi River bridge.
Jrue Holiday: "Jrue, Not Drew"
For all practical purposes, the QBs of both the New Orleans Saints and Pelicans pronounce their first names the same way. Putting this nickname on the back of his jersey would remind local NBA fans that there's a new Jrue in New Orleans.
Anthony Davis: "Unibrow"
This jersey nickname is obvious for the Pelicans. The NBA's first overall 2012 draft pick is famous for his great basketball skills and lack of visible skin between his eyebrows. Davis should have an incredible 2013-14 NBA season for New Orleans.
Ryan Anderson: "The Big Threeasy"
Ryan Anderson is a unique NBA talent as a PF who is also a deadly three-point shooter. So Anderson is a big guy who makes three-point shots in New Orleans. Nothing combines these three different elements better than "The Big Threeasy."
Eric Gordon: "Hoosier"
Pelicans SG Eric Gordon is very proud of his Indiana roots. Born in Indiana, he even played for the Indiana Hoosiers. Perhaps sporting the nickname "Hoosier" on his jersey would inspire Eric Gordon to reach his full potential for the Pelicans.
