NHL, union meet separately with mediator

Federal mediator Scott Beckenbaugh met separately with the NHL and the NHL Players Association on Friday, but no formal meetings between the two sides was scheduled, TSN reported.

The players union met internally Friday before meeting with Beckenbaugh, then the each side met with Becknebaigh in what the players union described as "shuttle mediation," according to the report.

The union released a statement saying there is no formal meeting schedule between the two sides.

The players present at the union meeting included Chris Campoli, Mathieu Darche, Shane Doan, Andrew Ference,Ron Hainsey, Jamal Mayers, George Parros, and Kevin Westgarth, the union said.

The NHL owners will not be returning to the negotiations, according to the report, which also noted several unresolved issues remain, including the second-year cap number, the length of player contacts and the players' pension.
