NHL Three Stars: Capitals, Senators move on to Round 2

No. 1 Star: Marcus Johansson, Washington Capitals

It was a huge night for Johansson. He scored both goals in Capitals 2-1 victory. MoJo’s second goal of the game came in overtime as it clinched the series for Washington.

No. 2 Star: Clarke MacArthur, Ottawa Senators

Clarke MacArthur scored in Game 2 and added an overtime winner Sunday in Game 6 to secure the Senators spot in the second round.

No. 3 Star: Braden Holtby, Washington Capitals

The netminder made 37 saves in the Leafs win. In the final minutes of the third period with the score tied, Holtby reminded everyone (again) why he’s becoming a perennial Vezina nominee.

Honorable Mention: Auston Matthews scored the first goal of the Leafs season and what would be the last goal of the season for the team. He had four goals total in the playoffs. Not a bad first year.

Who else but Justin Williams would help set up Johansson’s game winning goal. Alex Ovechkin registered a team high 12 shot attempts but no points. William Nylander was tops on the Leafs with eight shot attempts. Tyler Bozak (11 for 15) and Nazem Kadri (14 for 19) smoked the Caps on draws, including Nicklas Backstrom (7 for 20) … In six games against the Boston Bruins, the Sens were led by Bobby Ryan (4-3=7), Derick Brassard (2-6=8), and Erik Karlsson (0-6=6). Zdeno Chara and Noel Acciari led the Bruins with seven hits each. Patrice Bergeron was 20 for 28 on the dot. He scored the game tying goal that would eventually lead to overtime.

Did You Know? The NHL set a new record for overtime games in Round 1 with 18.

Dishonorable Mention: The Bruins took three straight delay of game Leo Komarov appeared to go knee-on-knee with Nate Schmidt. The Caps forward limped off to the dressing room but returned to finish the game.
