NHL roundup: Tambellini out as Oilers' GM
The Edmonton Oilers fired general manager Steve Tambellini and replaced him with Craig MacTavish, the team announced Monday.
MacTavish's former role as the Oilers' vice president of hockey operations will be filled by former Columbus Blue Jackets general manager Scott Howson.
The Oilers have had the No. 1 pick in the NHL draft three straight years and continue to struggle. The Oilers failed to reach the playoffs in any season under Tambellini's guidance since 2008-09.
They currently are 12th in the Western Conference standings with 39 points.
MacTavish had previously spent eight seasons (2000-01 to 2008-09) as the head coach of the Oilers and was named the club's senior vice president of hockey operations last summer.
---The game between the Boston Bruins and Ottawa Senators, scheduled to be played Monday in Boston, has been postponed as a result of the explosions earlier Monday at the Boston Marathon that killed two people and injured others, the NHL announced.
The game will be rescheduled, but no makeup date has been announced.
---The Pittsburgh Penguins announced that star center Sidney Crosby returned to the ice for the first time since breaking his jaw March 30 against the New York Islanders.
There is no timetable set on when Crosby will be activated for a game.
Penguins head coach Dan Bylsma also said said winger James Neal is symptom-free after suffering a concussion on Apr. 5.
---The Tampa Bay Lightning announced they signed goaltender Ben Bishop to a two-year contract extension.
Bishop is 2-3-0 with a .916 save percentage and a 3.21 goals-against average in six games with the Lightning since being acquired from the Ottawa Senators earlier this month.
---The NHL announced that Columbus Blue Jackets goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky, Toronto Maple Leafs right wing Phil Kessel and Dallas Stars goaltender Richard Bachman were named the league's "Three Stars" for the week.
---The Nashville Predators announced that they recalled defenseman Mattias Ekholm from Milwaukee of the AHL under emergency conditions. Ekholm, 22, has nine goals and 18 assists in 55 games for the Admirals this season.
---Minnesota Wild rookie forward Charlie Coyle won't face any discipline from the NHL for his hit on Columbus'Artem Anisimov on Saturday night, according to the Minnesota Star-Tribune's Mike Russo.
--New York Islanders defenseman Brian Strait is close to returning to action, and NHL.com reported he will play before the end of the regular season. He broke his ankle in a game in mid-February.
--The Minnesota Wild forward Matt Cullen missed the past six games with a lower-body injury, but he may return to action in Monday's game, according to the Minneapolis Star Tribune.
