NHL roundup: Stamkos has leg surgery
Center Steven Stamkos had surgery Tuesday to stabilize his broken right tibia, and the operation was a success, the Tampa Bay Lightning announced.
The procedure was performed in Boston, where Stamkos was hurt Monday during the Lightning's 3-0 loss to the Bruins.
According to the team, Stamkos will return home Thursday, but there is no determination of when he will be able to get back on the ice.
Stamkos, 23, was tied for the NHL lead in both goals (14) and points (23) entering Tuesday's games.
The injury is expected to keep Stamkos from playing for Team Canada in the Winter Olympics in February at Sochi, Russia.
The Lightning also recalled forward J.T. Brown and defenseman Dmitry Korobov from Syracuse of the American Hockey League.
--Forward Andrew Shaw signed a two-year contract extension with the Chicago Blackhawks through the end of the 2015-16 season.
"It's great to come to this agreement with Andrew and keep another important member of our team here in Chicago," said Blackhawks vice president and general manager Stan Bowman. "Andrew has proven his ability to play a prominent role on our team and we look forward to watching him continue to grow as a player for the Blackhawks."
Shaw, 22, currently ranks sixth on the team with 11 points (four goals) and has a team-high 51 hits through 18 games this season.
Shaw scored 15 points (nine goals) in 48 games in his first full NHL season in 2012-13 and was a force in the postseason run.
--Dallas Stars left wing Ray Whitney landed on injured reserve due to a lower-body ailment. Whitney was hurt Saturday during the Stars' game against the Chicago Blackhawks. Dallas replaced him on the roster by recalling center Travis Morin from the Texas Stars of the AHL.
