NHL Roundup: Spezza to return for Senators, Staal has MCL sprain to knee

Ottawa Senators center Jason Spezza will return from injury for Sunday's game against the Pittsburgh Penguins. Spezza missed most of the lockout-shortened season with a back injury.

Coach Paul MacLean and Spezza told reporters after Saturday's practice that Spezza will play in Game 3 of their Eastern Conference semifinal game, but they are not sure how much he will be able to play.

Pittsburgh leads the best-of-seven series 2-0.

---The Carolina Hurricanes announced center Eric Staal will need about three months to recover from an MCL sprain in his right knee, but will not need surgery. Staal sustained the injury during the World Hockey Championships during the week. He is expected to be ready for the start of the 2013-14 season.

Staal's injury occurred Thursday game for Team Canada against Sweden when he was hit by Alex Edler, who was ejected from the game and suspended for the rest of the tournament. Staal had 18 goals and 35 assists in 48 games this season. He finished sixth in the NHL with 53 points.
