NHL roundup: Senators' Konopka fined for verbal abuse

The SportsXchange

The Ottawa Senators and forward Zenon Konopka have been fined by the NHL for "verbal abuse" directed at New York Rangers center Brian Boyle before the Senators' game against the Rangers on Saturday night at Madison Square Garden.

According to an NHL press release, Konopka was fined $2,500 "for his verbal abuse directed at a New York Rangers player conducting a live television interview nearby during pre-game warm-ups." Boyle was the player in question. Konopka's fine - the maximum allowable under the league's Collective Bargaining Agreement - will go the Players' Emergency Assistance Fund. The Senators were fined $10,000 for the same incident. That money will go to the NHL Foundation.

Boyle was targeted by the Senators' on Saturday night after delivering several punches to the head of defenseman Erik Karlsson on Thursday night in the first game of the teams' Eastern Conference quarterfinal series. Boyle was attacked against the glass by defenseman Matt Carkner - who was suspended one game - then drawn into a fight with Chris Neil.

The series between the top-seeded Rangers and the eighth-seeded Senators is tied at one game apiece. The third game is scheduled for a 7:30 p.m. ET start on Monday night at Scotiabank Place in Ottawa.

---Pittsburgh Penguins Craig Adams has been suspended for one game and Penguins head coach Dan Bylsma has been fined $10,000 for Adams' behavior in the closing minutes of Sunday's playoff game against the Philadelphia Flyers.

Adams started a fight with less than five minutes left in the third period. He received a minor penalty for instigating, a major penalty for fighting and a game misconduct.

---Ottawa Senators captain Daniel Alfredsson practiced with the team on Monday morning in the team's pre-game skate at Scotiabank Place, but did not confirm whether or not he would return to action on Monday night when the Senators host the New York Rangers in the third game of their Eastern Conference quarterfinal series.

Alfredsson, 39, was elbowed by Rangers winger Carl Hagelin on Saturday night in the second period of the Senators' 3-2 overtime win at Madison Square Garden. He left the ice following the hit, and did not return to the game. He told reporters on Monday that he sustained a concussion from the blow, and would decide later on Monday if he will play on Monday night.

---Pittsburgh Penguins forwards James Neal and Arron Asham are both scheduled for disciplinary hearings on Tuesday in the aftermath of Sunday's 8-4 loss to the Philadelphia Flyers.

Asham, 34, was thrown out of Sunday's game after a cross-check to the throat of Philadelphia's Brayden Schenn. Neal, 24, delivered big hits to the Flyers' Sean Couturier and Claude Giroux, drawing accusations of head-hunting, and a charging penalty for the hit on Giroux.

---The New York Islanders have fired assistant coaches Scott Allen and Dean Chenowyth, making moves after the team finished in the basement of the Atlantic Division for the fifth consecutive season.

With video coordinator Ryan Ward leaving the team to take another position elsewhere, Doug Weight will be the only assistant returning to head coach Jack Capuano's staff for the 2012-2013 season.

---Vancouver Canucks leading scorer Daniel Sedin will join the team for practice Tuesday, the team announced, but it's uncertain whether he will play in Wednesday's game against Los Angeles. He has not played since sustaining a concussion March 21.
