NHL roundup: Leafs' Ranger out of hospital after hit

Toronto Maple Leafs defenseman Paul Ranger was released from a hospital after being hit from behind with an elbow that sent him off the ice on a stretcher during Wednesday night's game.

Ranger was assessed by doctors and discharged from hospital in Toronto, the team announced Thursday. He left the game after he was checked heavily into the boards by Tampa Bay Lightning forward Alex Killorn near the end of the first period.

The Maple Leafs gave no indication on when Ranger can return to action or whether he suffered an injury. Killorn was ejected for the hit, which occurred with 4.1 seconds left in the first period and Tampa Bay on a power play. He received a five-minute boarding major and a game misconduct.

---The Nashville Predators recalled forward Calle Jarnkrok from Milwaukee, the team announced Thursday.

Jarnkrok is expected to make his NHL debut Friday night when the Predators take on the Calgary Flames. Jarnkrok, 22, has five goals and seven points in five games with the Admirals since joining the American Hockey League team following Nashville's acquisition of him from Detroit on March 5.

---The Tampa Bay Lightning signed free agent forward Cody Kunyk to a one year, two-way NHL contract, the team announced Thursday.

Kunyk, 23, skated in 37 games for the University of Alaska-Fairbanks this season, posting 22 goals and 43 points to go along with 22 penalty minutes and a plus-13 rating. The 5-foot-11, 197-pounder led the Nanooks in goals, points, power-play goals (six) and short-handed goals (two).

---The Chicago Blackhawks agreed to terms with free-agent forward Matt Carey on a two-year contract, the team announced Thursday.

The 22-year-old Carey had 18 goals and 19 assists in 38 games this season as a freshman at St. Lawrence University. He tied for the team lead in goals and ranked second in points and power play goals (11).

Carey also played in the Ontario Junior Hockey League from 2010 to 2012 with Hamilton and Toronto. He totaled 58 goals and 95 assists in 93 games.
